2025-08-25, Restless Furlough Days: Home-Cooked Meals, Fish Tank Cleaning, Pregnant Wife, Plus Books and English Conversation

Today, I finally took a picture of my breakfast. If I keep building this habit, taking photos will soon become second nature. Once that happens, I’ll probably be uploading a lot more photos than I do now. This morning’s meal was a bowl of instant brown rice. I bought it for health reasons, but it was so dry and tasteless. Next time, I think I’ll try adding a little water. Beside it, there was some leftover potato doenjang soup from yesterday. Since I made such a big batch, I ate it more to “clear it out” than to truly enjoy it. Still, even the next day, it was pretty decent soup. It felt good to enjoy a slow and easy breakfast on a Monday morning while everyone else was rushing off to work.   After breakfast, I finally got around to doing  the fish tank water change I had been putting off. I had set up an automatic water change system using a water purifier hose, but it can’t suck up large debris, so I still need to use a siphon from time to time. Today was one of those...

2025-08-24, A Peaceful Sunday: Caring for My Pregnant Wife Through Meals, Worship, and Thoughtful Gifts

Today is Sunday, so we attended worship service. Normally, we go to church in person, but because my wife’s morning sickness gets worse if she sits for too long, we attended the service online this time. I definitely feel a big difference between attending worship offline and online. The key message of today’s sermon was about prayer. We were told to distinguish whether our prayers are just for ourselves,  or truly for the Lord. It was also emphasized that no matter how long we pray, prayers that are just for show and to be seen by others aren’t good prayers. Just as incense burned on the altar spreads its fragrance into the Holy of Holies, we shouldn’t stop praying until our prayers truly reach God. As soon as the service ended, my wife’s morning sickness got worse  because she hadn’t eaten, so I hurried to prepare lunch. Yesterday, I tried the water boiling method on pork, and today I applied it to beef. Today’s lunch menu was grilled beef, stir-fried kimchi,  ss...

2025-08-23, Tried making peach compote for the first time, and enjoyed the always-delicious Buldak Bokkeummyeon.

Starting the day,   For breakfast, I had kimchi stew with instant rice (Hetbahn). The peach you see above is a nectarine that my wife received as a gift from a friend, but it wasn’t fully ripe yet, so it didn’t taste great. You might wonder why we had fruit in the morning, but my wife is currently pregnant. Eating fruit really helps ease her morning sickness. As soon as I finished my meal, I went out to do some grocery shopping. This is the bag they gave me when I signed up for a Costco membership. They gave me two bags: one insulated cooler bag and one regular bag. Both are quite sturdy and durable, so I use them very well. The road to Costco was more congested than I expected. It turned out that a traffic light ahead was broken, and the police were directing traffic manually. Seeing the road get blocked while the police were directing made me realize again how much the traffic lights usually help keep things moving smoothly. I don’t have any photos of the groceries I bought at Co...
